Closing Turkey’s AKP absurd, says Poettering

LJUBLJANA/SLOVENIA - The president of the European Parliament has slammed the suggestion that Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) could be banned from political activity by the Constitutional Court.

The Justice and Development Party had come to power through democratic means, said EP president Hans-Gert Poettering late Thursday during an informal meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan on the sidelines of European Forum in the Slovenia capital of Ljubljana.

It would be absurd if the AKP were shut down by the courts as it was a democratic party, Poettering said.
