STRASBOURG - Professor Isil Karakas is to be sworn in as Turkey’s new representative on the panel of judges of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Monday evening, becoming the first woman judge from Turkey to sit in the court.

Karakas will take to oath of office at ceremony in Strasbourg attended by ECHR President Jean-Paul Costa. She was appointed to the position through a vote by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in January.

A lecturer at Istanbul’s Galatasaray University, Karakas has worked on European Union law and international human rights law.

Karakas has been appointed to the ECHR for a six year term.
